About This Tool
Use this concrete block calculator to estimate concrete masonry units (CMUs) for a rectangular wall. Enter wall length and height in feet, choose one of two nominal block sizes, and set a waste allowance. The result shows an estimated block count, wall surface area, and a rough number of 80 lb mortar bags. It is a planning estimate, not a structural design or purchase order.
What the calculator measures
The tool multiplies wall length by wall height to find gross wall area in square feet. For a standard nominal 8 × 8 × 16 inch CMU, it uses 1.125 blocks per square foot. For the half-height nominal 8 × 4 × 16 inch choice, it uses 2.25 blocks per square foot. These factors assume the nominal dimensions of the masonry unit and its usual joint module. The tool then adds your waste percentage and rounds the block count up to a whole unit.
Mortar is estimated as one 80 lb bag for every 33 blocks, rounded up. This is a simple planning factor. Actual mortar use changes with block type, joint width, workmanship, site conditions, and the product you buy. Check the mortar maker\'s coverage data before ordering. The tool labels this estimate Type S; it does not choose a mortar specification for your project.
How to use the concrete block calculator
- Measure the straight wall length and height in feet. Enter positive values in the two fields.
- Choose standard 8 × 8 × 16 inch CMU or half-height 8 × 4 × 16 inch CMU. The menu does not accept a custom block size.
- Choose a waste allowance from 0% to 30%. Waste covers cuts, breakage, and spare units; your actual allowance may differ.
- Select Calculate Blocks & Mortar. Read the block count, mortar-bag estimate, and gross wall area below the form.
Worked example: 20-foot by 8-foot wall
A wall 20 feet long and 8 feet high has 160 square feet of gross area. With standard nominal blocks, 160 × 1.125 gives 180 blocks before waste. A 10% allowance gives 198 blocks. At the tool\'s rough rate of 33 blocks per mortar bag, that is 6 bags of 80 lb mortar. With the half-height choice, the same wall uses 360 blocks before waste or 396 blocks with 10% waste. The tool estimates 12 mortar bags for that choice. These examples assume one continuous rectangular wall with no opening deducted.
Openings, corners, and irregular walls
This calculator has no fields for doors, windows, columns, corners, bond beams, or separate wall sections. It uses the full rectangle you enter. For a wall with an opening, calculate the opening\'s area separately and review the net area before purchasing; do not assume the displayed result has removed it. Complex walls may require different units at corners and openings, so a takeoff from drawings is more reliable than one area estimate. If you have several wall sections, calculate each section and keep a separate tally. Rounding each section can make the combined estimate slightly higher.
Choosing a waste allowance
Zero percent shows the theoretical count from the selected coverage factor. Ten percent is only a starting example, not a universal requirement. More cuts, breakage, transport damage, or awkward geometry can increase waste. A simple straight wall may need less. Review the site and supplier pack quantities, then pick the allowance that fits your work. The tool accepts increments of 5% in its input control, but you can enter another number between 0 and 30 if your browser permits it.
Before you order materials
- Confirm that the supplier\'s actual block dimensions and nominal dimensions match the selection.
- Check whether your plan needs special units, reinforcement, grout, lintels, or different mortar. This tool does not estimate them.
- Measure openings and changes in wall height from your drawings.
- Compare the bag estimate with the mortar manufacturer\'s coverage guidance.
- Check local building rules and obtain qualified design advice for structural or retaining walls.

Concrete block calculator FAQs
Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?
No. It calculates gross rectangular wall area. Account for openings separately when planning an order.
Can I enter a custom block size?
No. The menu offers two nominal sizes: 8 × 8 × 16 inches and 8 × 4 × 16 inches.
Why does the block count include waste?
The selected percentage adds spare units after the basic area calculation. Set it to 0% to see the theoretical count.
Is the mortar-bag count exact?
No. It is a rough estimate based on one 80 lb bag per 33 blocks. Verify coverage for the mortar and joint details you will use.
Can this tool design a structural wall?
No. It estimates material quantities only. Use a qualified professional and local requirements for structural design.
