About This Tool

Split a bill equally among diners, with tax and tip included. Enter the bill amount before tax, the tax amount, the tip percentage, and the number of diners. The calculator shows the tip, grand total, and amount each person pays.

How to use the Split Bill Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount before tax.
  2. Enter the tax amount shown on the bill. Use 0 if no tax applies.
  3. Choose a tip percentage. The tip is calculated from the bill amount before tax.
  4. Enter the number of diners, then select Split Bill.

How the calculation works

Tip = bill amount × tip percentage ÷ 100. Grand total = bill amount + tax amount + tip. Each person pays = grand total ÷ number of diners.

For example, a $142.50 bill, $11.40 tax, 18% tip, and four diners gives a $25.65 tip, $179.55 grand total, and $44.89 per person when rounded to cents. Collecting rounded shares can leave a one-cent difference.

What this tool can and cannot do

This calculator makes an equal split. It does not assign different items or contribution amounts to individual diners. Enter an existing tax amount; the tool does not calculate tax from a rate. All amounts use dollars.

Common uses

  • Divide a restaurant bill evenly after adding tax and tip.
  • Estimate each person\'s share before paying for a group meal.
  • Check the total tip and per-person cost for a shared expense.
